Saariselkä might just be one of Lapland’s best kept secrets. Tucked away above the Arctic Circle, it’s a place where winter feels extra magical. Days can be spent flying down Europe’s longest toboggan run, snowshoeing through silent forests, or gliding along cross-country ski trails. And when the sun goes down, there’s nothing better than relaxing in a traditional smoke sauna or watching the northern lights dance over your head.

1. Hiking or skiing to Prospektor Mining Cabin

Prospektor Mining Cabin
Bonfire - wood can be found for free in the little cabin in the back

This is one of those trails that feels like a little adventure back in time. Whether you’re hiking in the summer or skiing through the snowy forest in winter, the journey to the old Prospektor’s Mining Cabin is both peaceful and full of character. The trail takes you through quiet woods and open fells, leading you to a rustic old cabin. It’s not a difficult route, which makes it perfect for a relaxed half-day outing. 2. Kaunispää

The view from the top of Kaunispää
The toboggan ride down

This is pure fun — no matter your age. The toboggan run from the top of Kaunispää Fell is one of the longest in Finland, and it’s a must-do if you’re anywhere near Saariselkä in winter. The track winds down for about 1.8 kilometers with gentle curves, forest sections, and enough speed to keep things exciting without being scary.

You can rent a sled in town (many places also offer helmets), then take a taxi or hike up to the top of the fell. The views from up there are stunning – especially if you catch the pink and orange colors of the Arctic twilight. Then it’s just you, your sled, and gravity!

A few tips:

  • Dress warmly in layers — the ride down can get windy.
  • Wear waterproof pants if you have them (you might wipe out, and that’s part of the fun)
  • A helmet is a good idea, especially for kids or first-timers.
  • If the track is icy, take it slow the first time to get a feel for it.

Whether you do it once or five times, the Kaunispää toboggan run is a highlight of any winter trip to Saariselkä.

3. Smoke Sauna & ice dipping in Kiilopää

Ice dipping area

If you get the chance, don’t skip the smoke sauna at Kiilopää — it’s one of those experiences you’ll be talking about for years. The sauna itself is warm, dark, and full of that lovely woodsmoke scent. It feels more gentle than a regular sauna, like the heat wraps around you instead of blasting you.

Once you’re toasty, the real adventure begins — the ice dip. The stream is cold. Like really cold. But stepping into it (even just for a second) makes you feel wide awake and alive. And going back into the sauna afterward? Pure bliss.

A few note-worthy tips before going:

  • Give yourself time. Don’t rush — this is about slowing down.
  • Bring a big towel, a swimsuit, and some flip-flops for the short walk to the stream.
  • Drink water before and after — and maybe treat yourself to a warm drink afterward.
  • Do the dip if you can. It’s intense, but totally worth it — even just once!
  • Watch the sky. On a clear night, you might catch the northern lights dancing above the steam.

It’s peaceful, energizing, and a little bit wild — exactly what a Lapland sauna should be.

3. Snowshoe skiing to Kiilopää

Hiking to Kiilopää summit is a fantastic way to experience the stunning beauty of Urho Kekkonen National Park, no matter the season. I had the chance to explore this trail on snowshoe skis during winter, and it was truly magical – gliding through crisp, snowy forests with the quiet all around, and reaching the summit where breathtaking views stretch out in every direction. Hiking or skiing on this trail gives you a true taste of Lapland’s wild charm.

  • Where: Urho Kekkonen National Park.
  • When: All year.
  • Elevation: 346 m.
  • Distance: Approx. 5,6 km.
  • Approximate time: 2-3 hours total.
  • Difficulty: Moderate.

  • Parking: Yes. There is free public parking in Kiilopää.

If you’re looking for a warm, relaxed place to eat in Saariselkä, Fieno is a great choice. It’s an Italian-inspired restaurant with a Lappish twist, and the vibe is friendly and unpretentious – perfect after a day out in the snow.

Start with the tomato soup – it’s simple, but so comforting, with a creamy basil swirl that makes it feel a little extra special. Then go for the reindeer osso buco. It’s slow-cooked and full of flavor, served with creamy mashed potatoes. The dish is hearty and rich – kind of the perfect Lapland comfort food, with a bit of Italian flair.
